Study in Turkey #2.1: Interview

Hi guys!

Many of you asked me to write more about interview experience for Turkiye burslari /Turkey Scholarship. Here is a new post, dedicated only to interview questions. Please, write your comments to this post and share your interview experince. Don't forget to write your country and level of studies. When I get enough comments, I will write down all your experiences in a form of a post. You can also subscribe to my blog, add me to Google circles and follow me on Facebook - Istanbul Konstantinopel. Like this, you will not miss any post and update.

Where and when are the Turkey Scholarship interviews held????
Firstly, let me tell you something about the time of interview. As you can see at the calendar for 2016, interviews will be held from April until June.

This means that every embassy will schedule their interviews according to their availability. I, for example had my interview at the end of May. If you live or study abroad (not in the country which passport you hold), the interview will be at the Turkish Embassy of the country, where you live at the moment (of course, only in case that in your application you've stated that you live/study abroad). In case that you already live/study in Turkey, you will probably have your interview in Ankara.

Usually the interviews are held at Turkish Embassies around the world. I've heard of some examples of Skype interviews  - especially in big countries, where it's difficult to travel to the capital (where the embassy usually is). You will receive email or call from your embassy and they will inform you about exact time and date of your interivew. I advice you to take all the documents, which you uploaded in your application form, with you.

In case, that there is any mistake in your application form, like wrong spelled name/laste name, wrong passport number, etc, please inform the embassy staff during your interview.

Interview experience and questions

This is one of the most popular questions that I usually get from you: what will they ask me, how should I write my motivation letter???

Firstly, ask yourself: Why do I want to study in Turkey? Why is this important for me and my future career? How can this contribute to my career? If you can reply to all this questions, than you've probably written quite good motivation letter.

When it comes to interview, I have to say that for me, and as I know, for many other students, interview was a nice experience. Embassy staff and in some cases also special Turkiye burslari workers will ask you some questions. The language of interview can be ENGLISH. If you are fluent in Turkish, you can speak in Turkish. Depending on cuntry and foreign languages the staff speaks, interviews might be also held in outher languages.

So, what do they ask, what is important to them?? Actually similar questions that you already had to reply while applying online. Why do you want to study in Turkey? Why is this important for you and you future career? How can this contribute to your career?

They might also ask some specific questions related to your research topic (especially for MA and PhD candidates). Another question is - why have you chosen certain department and/or research topic? Why do you want to study this in Turkey.

Third topic can be relations between your country and Turkey. They can ask you something about history of your countries (of course, if there is something in common) or how can you contribute to better relations between your countries in case you win the scholarship.

How was your interview experience? Please, write a comment to this post and share it with others.

Hi, i am from Afghanistan and i am in intermediate stage of english language and i do not have any certificate in English language, can u say me what is my interview language?

Spelayla G. said...

Hi! If the embassy in your country speaks your native language, than they will ask you questions in that language, if not in English/Turkish. Ask this to them, when they call you.

Hello, first of all, gotta say very nice blog you got there, quite impressing and detailed!

Got a question that's kinda baffling though, I have applied for this year's scholarship and had an English university as a first choice. Now I'm wondering if I have to bring an English proficiency test during the interview? I currently don't have one and was wondering if I can have it here before traveling (mostly) or maybe in Turkey if time wasn't on my side? Pretty sure it's not common to occur so it would be difficult to answer but any help would very appreciated! Thank you!

Spelayla G. said...

Hi!
You don't need to show them any English proficiency document at the moment. If you will win the scholarship and your education will be in English, you will have to take an intensive Turkish course (and pass the exam). This will take 1 year. During this time you can also take the English proficiency exam.

Hello Spelayla.. I am just wondering..if they are going to do a phone interview or a Skype interview, will they email to tell me or should i just keep my phone with me at all times? I am askung because i have heard that some of the granted students from my country had phone interviews, as we do not have a turkish embassy in our country...the nearest embassy is in another country altogether.

Spelayla G. said...

Hi!
They called me to invite me to interview. I guess in your case they will firstly inform you about the time and date of interview (via email/phone), so than you can be ready for it. Where are you from?

Thanks. I am from Lesotho

Hello, I need to know, if I want to leave my country for visiting , and the interview determined can I change the place or the date of the interview??

It might be early. Be patient.

i would like to know about selection procedure, and is it necessery to have english proficiency score, as i have applied only for english taught programs
Thanks

Spelayla G. said...

Hey!
If you get selected, you will have 1 more year to take English proficiency exam (as the first year in Turkey you will study Turkish and not at the university).

Anonymous said...

but i dont have to study turkish.
i have applied for english taught programs only, since i hv studied in english medium only, do u still need ielts/ toefl

Spelayla G. said...

If you want to study with this scholarship, you need to proove that you know Turkish or obligatory take intensive Turkish course.

Spelayla G. said...

This depends on have flexible the Turkish Embassy in your country is. Good luck!

Anonymous said...

Thanks for ur time.. Are the scholarships fixed per country.. i hv 69.75% can i get in masters

Spelayla G. said...

Hey! Could you apply with this average? I think it will be difficult, but of course it depends on other candidates from your country. Yes, there is a limit, but I don't know the numbers.

Hi! I've got an invitation letter for the interview and they ask me to bring my original documents with me. But I'm currently in Turkey, working in a volunteer project - I don't have any opportunity to take original documents that are in another country(I just have 2 passports with me). Could it be a problem? Thank you!

Elena said...

P.S. I've asked about this topic via form on the web-site, but they did not reply.

Spelayla G. said...

Hi Elena! When it's your interview? You have 2 options- you can call them and ask, or just go to interview with no documents. I don't know, if it's gonna be a problem or not. I know that you will have to show original documents before applying scholarship agreement (in case you win scholarship) - this will be in July/August.

Hello Brother!
I have been invited for the interview to be held this Week.
My worry is that, unlike the 12 Universities that we are allowed to apply for, I only found one university and one programme available in the link during application for PhD in Science. Do you have an idea when i can solve this? What impacts can this have on my interview performance? Have you encounter similar case before? Please clarify this for me bro.

Hi

I applied for an undergraduate program this year, but I got nothing until that moment. I mean I thought everything is perfect. My GPA is 4.00/4.00 and I got a lot of extracurricular activities. Also, I got 99 at the TOEFL test. I am pretty disappointed now.
So, my question is "Does the committee notify people and tell them that they did not got in or they just ignore it?"
Is it possible to still get notification or it is over.

Spelayla G. said...

Hi!
They don't notify everyone. You can contact the Turkish embassy in your country if they've had interveiws. I think there are still many students waiting for it.

Gil Mahu said...

Hi bro
I think u didn't understand me. I only found one university available during application for PhD. Now that I'm invested for interview do u think I can have the chance to choose other universities? Why was is only one while we were told to choose up to 12?
If u can ask ur colleague PhD scholars and give me an answer by tomorrow the latest I'll be very grateful
Regards!

Hi G. My interview dat6e is today 13/05/2016 at 1 Pm as shown by my invitation email. I came to the Embassy since this morning and heard that they the judges have conducted interviews here and left since the 11th.
How can they send me another date and conduct interviews on another date?
How can I let them know?
the Embassy does not have their contact.
Please help me

Spelayla G. said...

I understood you. Not every year offer all the programmes to the foreign students. I am not sure, if you will be able to choose more options, but you can ask them.

Spelayla G. said...

Try to contact them via embassy or contact Turkiye Burslari directly.

Unknown said...

Hi, i have no passport yet but already applied my interview is on 21th of this month. Is it necessary of having passport at the time of interview.

Gil Mahu said...

Thank you for responses. These people have just given me a wrong appointment and made me waste my money to travel all the way to the Embassy. The Embassy officers said they don't have their address (but I think they don't want to help me that's why they refused to help me). I'm trying to contact the burslari directly by email since yesterday but no answer yet. It's so frustrating.
In case you have another contact that can urgently help please give it to me at gilmahu14@gmail.com
Thank you

I don't know how to help you with that. And how can somebody steal your phone number?

Anonymous said...

yes bro. I got no reply.

Gil Mahu said...

Annonymous, don't worry. They never respond to people. It's very bad. For my case for instance, I was invited for interview with a wrong appointment. when I went to the embassy on the date that is mentioned in my email, i was informed that the judges have finished and left two days before. Since then up to now i have been trying to contact them via email but no response. I even got the phone number of the call center and called them straight to complain about my situation but they only promise to work on it but nothing. It's just bad. They would not have invited me and i would not have wasted may money and time to travel all the way to the embassy.

For my friend who lost his phone, please buy another line (sim) and go to the headquarters of your network provider with it and explain to them that you want the lost number back. They will charge you something but you will get your old number back.

I greet you all.
Enjoy your studies Mr Spelayla G.

Congratulations! Firstly, don't be scared, it is not a difficult thing. Secondly, do you remember which universities/departments have you selected?

Hi!

Out of curiosity; what exactly would happen if I opt to cancel my scholarship after the compulsory Turkish language course? Are there financial repercussions?

Spelayla G. said...

Hey! As far as I know, nothing will happen. I advice you to read scholarship contract before you sign it. Maybe they've changed some rules.

Anonymous said...

Hey! This is the anon who asked about the scholarship cancellation. Thank you for the response.

Also, how safe is it to be in Istanbul right now? I'm quite concerned for my safety.

Spelayla G. said...

Hi!
I don't know how to reply on safty question. It is very relaitve and of course, depends where you come from. I live in Istanbul now and I feel quite safe, but until when, we don't know.

Anonymous said...

Hi! Sorry for constantly writing new comments instead of replying to the thread, it doesn't seem to work for me.

Regarding the safety question, today's attack in Istanbul is something to consider.

Anyway, you've asked to share interview experiences. Here's mine:

I messed up from the moment I walked in. First of all, I walked into the interview room by accident. Was asked to leave -- awful first impression. Anyway, they were very polite when I was called back in and we laughed off the incident.

My session lasted for twenty minutes, at most. It was nearing the end of the day and everyone was exhausted (understandable, really). As a result, I was not allowed to complete some of my answers.

Ten minutes into the interview, I was asked whether I'd consider studying something else. One of the interviewers (a pretty eminent Turkish professor, which I did not realise at the time) thought I would be better off studying his field of expertise. In fact, he asked me whether I'd overlooked his department during the application process. Fair point.

My interview questions were clearly spontaneous and different. Was asked detailed questions on my field of interest, for the most part. Nothing was based on the personal statement.

Apart from that, it went well. They were very amiable and keen despite being knackered.

Spelayla G. said...

Hi!
I am sorry, I haven't see this question. It is not a problem. If you will be selected, you will need to apply for passport.

Hello spelayla,
Any idea for interviews in Sierra Leone

Anonymous said...

Hello Spelayla,
Today I checked my application status and noticed that it says "pending review". What does that mean. Is it something I should be worried about?
Thanks

Spelayla G. said...

Hı!
Sorry, I have no information about this. Contact your embassy.

Spelayla G. said...

Hey!
Did you have interveiw?

Anonymous said...

No I have not been interviewed. From last year, I was told applicants from Sierra Leone were not interviewed.

Anonymous said...

I got interviewed last month and my account now is showing "pending review". what does that imply

Spelayla G. said...

I didn't know that.
It means that they have to review your application.

Hi from Slovakia Spelayla!
What a great blog!
I want to apply for next year and im so curious about their preferences.Do they thy to choose students from every country or they look only at my average and academic achievments.Do u think,ll they give me the number of last years applications from our country when i call turkish embassy here?. Oh i want to estimate my chances. Thank uuu<3

Spelayla G. said...

Hi!
As far as I know, they have a limited number of scholarship for every country. Since there are not many applicants from your country (at least as far as I know), your chances may be high. Anyway, you have to meet the requirements (age, average grade...).
I am not sure, if they can share their contacts with you, but maybe they can share your contact with them.

Hi Spelayla G. Thanks for the valuable information you are providing to us. I would like to ask, do you have any information about interview schedule in countries. I mean are these interviews done in stage for instance undergraduates or postgraduates separately in different months in the same country? Sorry for any confusion, English is not my first language. Thanks in advance.

Spelayla G. said...

Hi!
I don't have any schedule. I think it also depends on each embassy and how busy are they. When I applied, the interviews were separated, firtsly MA and PhD and than undergrad. If you have doubts about this, it's better to contact Turkish Embassy in your country. They should know about this.
And don't worry, your English is great.

Spelayla G. said...

Hi!
I hope that I am not too late. So you will have to say a few words about yourself/what you study, etc. It should not be too difficult. I am from Slovenia and I applied for PhD.

Suppose the scholarship committee selects me for a particular university, is it possible that the university can still reject me even after recommended by the scholarship committee? If yes then what could be the reasons?

Spelayla G. said...

No...only in case that they want some extra exams (like IELTS;...). BUt you will have a year to handle it.

jibran qadri said...

I applied for Ankara university vet medicine and Im pretty positive the scholarship committee will select me for ankara university. I have around 80% in my high school with majors in biology. I wanted to know if it is possible the university will reject after the scholarship committee recommends them my application. Thank you, you just took off a major worry from my head. Thanks a lot!

Hi.Thanks for your help but I had a question. What do they mean when they say pending review.my application status is written so.please help.

Anonymous said...

I went for my interview on the 18th of June this year. Interestingly, my interview lasted less than seven or so minutes. I was very worried because the interview of other applicants lasted relatively longer. Can you kindly guessed why this happened so? They asked questions like, why am still single, what field I intended studying(specific field which I answered Statistics in Medicine), whether my university was a good one or not(my university is the third best in my country). I would be glad if could fairly guess when my the interview results will be out, taking in consideration that the interview was conducted June 18. Thank you so much for your time. My name is Salpawuni.

Spelayla G. said...

Hey!
I don't have the exact answer for that, because as I've seen many students have this status (those who went to interveiw and those who didn't).

Spelayla G. said...

Hey!
I don't know why it was so short. Is it possible that you were one of the last candidates and that they were tired??
They asked you why were you still fingle?? I am sorry, but I think this kind of question shouldn't be asked in this kind of interveiws. Could you tell me your gender?

Anonymous said...

Thank you for the timely reply and yes, they did ask me. I am actually male. As for your guess that they were probably tired, I would suspect so because one of them will often come out and ask how many were left to be interviewed? I also realized they were more interested in the verfication of applicants' documents than rigorous academic interview. In all, it is my hope that I get selected, in shaa Allaah.

Has anyone from the Dominican Republic or United States (or Central America) been invited for an interview? If so, when and where?

Gil Mahu said...

Hello guys.
My interview was scheduled for May 13 but that turned out to be wrong appointment.
After more than a month now they have finally called me to give me a phone interview. However, this could not be possible without putting high pressure on them by my daily calls to the call centre of the Turkiye Burslary.

As a phone call, the interview lasted about 5 min or so.
Questions were mainly about self-introduction, the intended program and future plans after studies.
Fingers crossed.
Thank you.
Please Spelayla, should I expect any change on my applicant page after the interview?

I'm Gildas from Benin, a PhD applicant
